Turtle Cave

Shpella e Milotit

A dramatic sea cave in the Kakome Gorge, reachable only by sea.

Turtle Cave, known locally as Shpella e Milotit, is one of the most photographed sea caves on the Albanian Riviera. It is carved into limestone cliffs about 8 km northwest of Sarandë, deep in the wild Kakome Gorge, where the rock rises up to 15 metres straight out of the sea. There are no roads and no crowds: the only way in is by boat.

The name comes from the weathered rock around the entrance, which resembles a turtle's shell, and from the sea turtles sometimes seen in the clear water nearby. As the boat eases toward the cliffs the water turns a vivid emerald green over the pale seabed.
